The offensively challenged Sabres need another year or two of fail in order secure the draft picks that will yield star forwards.

None of the current Sabres or prospects projects as a legit first line player except for Vanek who was secured with a top 5 pick - exactly the draft position we need to get again.

Sadly, Vanek is on his way out and their isn't a player in the system who can replace his production.

Hodgson, Grigorenko and Armia are 2nd line talents. The Sabres only 1st line talent is Vanek. And he probably won't be here much longer.

My point is that we are still a couple drafts from getting our Pat Kane/Stamkos/Getzlaf etc.

Hodgson looks like a sold #2 Center. I think that has been his ceiling since he was drafted.

Grigorenko is too slow to develop into a true number 1 center. Maybe a move to the wing could elevate his status.

Girgensons projects as a high end #3 pivot, or low end #2. Ditto for Larsson.
